Interserve Site Services to open £2m waste recycling facility

Interserve Site Services’ new £2 million state of the art waste recycling facility at Aldridge is on track for completion in December, after which it will play a key role in assisting the region’s councils, commercial and construction sectors in meeting their landfill reduction targets.

The new facility is being built by Interserve itself, the international support services and construction group, of which Interserve Site Services is a part. Once completed, the new plant will be able to process approximately 250,000 tonnes of waste material per year, and return a range of recycled products to the market. In addition, enhanced mechanisation over the three acre site will enable the new plant to recycle a highly impressive 95 per cent of all the material it will process, which is especially good news for the environmental credentials of the area.

With every UK construction project valued at over £300,000 now being required to include a waste management contract as part of its scope of works, and with waste management accounting for a high proportion of councils’ annual expenditure, an efficient and professional service is becoming increasingly important.

“We have been working with Interserve Site Services for five years now,” says Gary Brookes, Head of Housing Services at Walsall Housing Group, who own and manage around 19,000 homes across Walsall. He adds: “As an organisation which places a lot of importance on the environment, we know that the careful handling of waste is crucial. We know Interserve Site Services offers high levels of recycling, and has the back-up of the Interserve group with its ISO 14001 ‘green credentials’. This new facility will do much to assist us in the challenge of meeting our landfill reduction targets, and it will be good to see it in operation in January next year.”

Ibstock Aldridge has been a customer of Interserve Site Services for over fourteen years. The brick manufacturer uses the company as its ‘one stop shop’ waste disposal solution provider. Ibstock Aldridge not only sources its skips from the company, but it uses Interserve Site Services to handle hazardous waste and as a broker for its waste. In addition, Ibstock Aldridge can benefit from advisory support, when required, concerning the legalities of relevant legislation.

Richard Hall, Factory Manager, says: “Ibstock Aldridge using a next door neighbour in this way makes so much sustainable sense to both companies.”

The new plant takes the form of a large waste reception building containing the main elements of the waste handling plant that have been built on brownfield land. It also encompasses the material handling line, material storage and processing areas and a brick built administration and welfare building built from local clay Ibstock bricks.
