In February, leading figures in the UK’s safe industry gathered at the Headquarters of the Security Institute at Caldecote near Nuneaton to launch Eurosafe UK, their new trade association.
Bo Blomdahl, President of the parent association, Eurosafe, described its formation 22 years ago to represent the interests of the industry in mainland Europe, promoting the development of standards for testing and rating safes. However, he warned of wide variations in the rigorous application of current EN test standards, leading to cheap, poor quality products finding their way into the UK market. This has led to confusion and a serious loss of trust by British insurers and their policyholders.
The main aim of Eurosafe UK is to restore confidence in European standards by encouraging insurers, brokers, specifiers, security managers and customers to recognise the importance of endorsing safes tested in the UK by LPCB/BRE or elsewhere by laboratories affiliated to the European Fire & Security Group (EFSG) or those certified by the European Certification Board – Security (ECB.S).
Mike Palmer FSyI, a member of in the British safe industry for over 40 years and well known for his views concerning declining security standards, was appointed Chairman of the new Association and pledged to promote the views of Eurosafe UK’s membership.
