Gunnebo Entrance Control has introduced NexGate, a compact entrance control system designed to support retailers in managing secure and efficient customer movement through self-checkout areas.
The system has been developed for high-traffic retail checkout zones. Its sliding leaf mechanism forms a controlled barrier that remains closed until a valid receipt or barcode is presented, reinforcing exit validation without impeding the customer experience.
NexGate offers flexible configurations, with integrated or standalone scanning columns that can be adapted to store layout, trolley use, and available space. In areas where customer maneuverability is essential, standalone scanner columns provide additional room for receipt scanning, helping reduce congestion during peak periods.
“Retailers are navigating a complex landscape where customer expectations for convenience must coexist with the need for robust loss prevention,” said Elly Sharples, Global Product & Service Marketing Manager. “NexGate has been proactively designed to support both priorities in helping to guide customers naturally through self-checkout while reinforcing a clear and controlled exit process that is safe and secure.”
Safety and operational continuity are integral to the system’s design. Dual safety photocells continuously monitor the passage area; if an obstruction is detected, the leaves automatically reopen and remain open until the area is clear. Obstacle detection technology halts movement immediately upon resistance, while smooth sliding action and LED indicators provide intuitive visual guidance for customers.
To support loss prevention, NexGate includes anti-fraud photocell technology that can detect objects passed beneath the leaves and trigger an alarm. A configurable timeout alarm alerts staff if the passage remains occupied for extended periods, helping to prevent bottlenecks.
The system has a compact footprint suitable for busy retail environments where space is limited. It integrates with existing point-of-sale and self-checkout systems, simplifying installation, and its low-maintenance design reduces potential downtime.
“By combining controlled access, intuitive guidance, and adaptable configuration, NexGate provides retailers with a practical, technically, stylish solution for managing self-checkout exits,” added Elly. “It reflects our commitment to developing entrance control solutions that respond directly to the operational realities of retailers, enabling stores to operate smoothly and securely, while maintaining a consistent and positive experience for customers.”
NexGate is available in brushed stainless steel or powder-coated finishes, allowing retailers to align the system with their store design while maintaining a discreet and functional presence within the checkout area.
