El Salvador Customs is set to enhance its border security operations with the introduction of a suite of high-energy X-ray inspection systems supplied by Smiths Detection. The deployment aims to improve the detection of smuggling, contraband, and illicit substances while reducing the need for manual inspections.
El Salvador, 23 February 2026 – Smiths Detection, a global provider of threat detection and security inspection technologies, has secured a contract to supply El Salvador Customs with High-energy Cargo & Vehicle (HCV) X-ray inspection systems for vehicle and container screening. The new systems are designed to deliver fast, reliable screening at border points using high-quality imaging technology.
The contract includes the HCVP Z60 drive-through portal, which supports cargo scanning at a rate of 100 to 120 vehicles per hour. This system is intended to enhance operational efficiency while allowing customs teams to identify potential threats without the extensive reliance on manual inspections.
The deployment also features the HCVM XT mobile X-ray screening system, which can be relocated between different sites as operational needs dictate. Its compact footprint and minimal infrastructure requirements make it suitable for high-demand environments. The project will be delivered in partnership with Global Customs Solutions.
All HCV systems are equipped with configurable image enhancement tools and advanced analytical algorithms, including machine learning capabilities. These features are designed to support more consistent and faster image interpretation, enabling border agencies to identify illicit goods and high-risk consignments with improved accuracy.
German Castro, Business Development Manager at Smiths Detection, said: “We are proud to continue our relationship with El Salvador Customs. Every day, large volumes of goods and vehicles pass through El Salvador’s entry and exit points. Our integrated screening technology will help customs teams screen a wide range of vehicles and goods efficiently, while maintaining the flow of legitimate trade.”
