Access control system upgraded at Lion Health Care

Amthal has completed an access control upgrade at Lion Health Care in Stourbridge, replacing and expanding the medical practice’s existing system to provide centralised management of access across the site.

Lion Health Care is a multi-disciplinary healthcare practice providing primary care services to the local community. The facility accommodates a large number of patients, staff and visitors each day and includes a range of clinical, administrative and restricted-access areas.

The project involved the replacement and enhancement of the existing access control infrastructure. More than 50 doors were incorporated into the upgraded system through the installation of new readers, controllers and wireless handle sets. The result is a single platform for managing access permissions across the building.

Jürgen Versluis, Finance and Data Manager, Information Governance Lead and Senior Information Risk Owner at Lion Health Care, Stourbridge, said: “Maintaining the security of our premises and the sensitive information we hold is a fundamental part of how we operate, so it was important any upgrade strengthened both control and day to day usability.

“The new system gives us a far more effective way to manage access across the site, while still aligning with our governance responsibilities. Carrying out the work overnight was essential, as it meant there was no disruption to patient care, and the team showed a clear understanding of how to work within the demands of a busy healthcare environment.”

Installation and commissioning work was carried out outside normal operating hours to minimise disruption to healthcare services. Four engineers completed the main stages of the project overnight, including system configuration, testing and commissioning.

The upgraded system enables more detailed management of access permissions across different areas of the practice. Wireless handle sets were also incorporated into the installation, reducing the need for additional cabling on existing doors.

System configuration was developed to support information governance requirements, including secure access management and auditability across clinical and administrative areas. The platform is designed to accommodate future operational changes, including adjustments to staffing, access permissions and building use.

David Williamson, Business Development Manager at Amthal Fire & Security, said: “This project reflects the importance of delivering technical upgrades in a way that respects the operational realities of healthcare environments. Working overnight allowed us to complete a complex installation without interrupting day to day services, while ensuring the system was fully functional and ready for immediate use. The outcome is a cohesive access control solution that provides clarity, control and reliability across the entire site.”
