Mitie has retained its security contract with Transport for London (TfL) under a new five-year agreement covering physical security, reception and associated services across the transport network.
The agreement, which includes an option to extend the contract until 2032, will see more than 480 Mitie employees deployed across TfL locations. These include 58 London Underground sites, the Elizabeth line, river piers and the London Transport Museum.
The contract continues a working relationship between Mitie and TfL that began in 2017 and combines frontline security provision with intelligence and analytical support.
As part of the agreement, a dedicated Crime and Intelligence Taskforce will provide threat assessments, analysis and targeted interventions in response to issues including graffiti, vandalism and anti-social behaviour.
The taskforce will work alongside TfL and enforcement agencies on investigations, including activity aimed at identifying and prosecuting repeat offenders.
Mitie’s Intelligence Security Operations Centre (ISOC) in Northampton will also provide 24-hour monitoring and analysis of security risks affecting the TfL network. Information gathered by the centre will be used to identify developing threats and support the deployment of security resources.
Under the employment provisions included within the contract, staff will receive at least the London Living Wage and contracts meeting the Living Hours standard for minimum working hours.
Employees will also have access to life assurance, a 24-hour multilingual online GP service and an Employee Assistance Programme covering practical, financial and mental wellbeing support for staff and their immediate families.
A further 3,000 WalkSafe Pro licences will be provided for employees working or travelling during anti-social hours. The personal safety application includes journey-sharing functionality, SOS alerts and round-the-clock monitoring support.
Apprenticeships and employment programmes
The contract also contains a number of employment and training commitments.
Mitie plans to deliver five apprenticeship programmes each year, including Level 2 to Level 4 Security Management apprenticeships and a Level 3 Critical Incident and AI apprenticeship.
Four Ready2Work programmes will also be delivered annually alongside 30 work placements intended to provide employment experience and training for people from underrepresented and disadvantaged backgrounds.
Mitie will additionally continue working with organisations including DebateMate on school and community workshops focused on confidence, leadership skills and employment opportunities within the transport and facilities management sectors.
The programmes follow social value initiatives previously introduced as part of Mitie’s cleaning contract with TfL.
Alongside its security operations, around 2,000 Mitie employees currently provide cleaning services across TfL trains, Underground stations and bus stations.
The company also provides engineering maintenance and facilities management services at TfL head office locations and the London Transport Museum.
