Assist Security Group (ASG), a UK-based security solutions provider, has introduced a new Close Protection (CP) course under the direction of Paul Ephgrave MVO, a former officer for Queen Elizabeth II. This Security Industry Authority (SIA)-qualified program includes training across various close protection fields such as executive and high-net-worth individual security, as well as media and hostile environment protection.
The course began on October 28, 2024, and offers scenario-based training within key London locations. It aims to develop participants’ skills and knowledge in close protection to meet industry standards. The residential program includes food and accommodation, with financing options available, making it accessible to a broader range of candidates.
Ephgrave brings extensive experience to the course, having served 32 years with the Metropolitan Police Service, 17 of which he spent as the “Queen’s Police Officer” in charge of the security team for Queen Elizabeth II.

Troy Hewitt, CEO of ASG, said: “We’re delighted to offer this exceptional training opportunity under Paul Ephgrave’s leadership. His unrivalled experience in royal protection, combined with ASG’s expertise in security solutions, creates a programme that sets new standards in close protection training. This course will equip security professionals with the skills needed to excel in today’s complex security landscape.”
The program offers two options: a 22-day course with First Response Emergency Care (FREC) 3 certification, and an 18-day option without it. Both courses result in a Level 3 SIA Close Protection Qualification.
The course curriculum covers 194 hours of modules, including close protection fundamentals, threat awareness, conflict management, physical intervention, and practical CP operations. Training occurs at central London venues, providing participants with a realistic setting for future professional environments.

Ephgrave’s credentials include serving as Director of the National Protection Officers training course and his current role as Director of Security at Claridge’s Hotel. His transition from public to private sector security brings a unique perspective to the training.
“Paul’s experience bridges the gap between elite-level protection and commercial security needs,” Hewitt added. “This course will provide participants with insights and skills that are directly applicable to the diverse challenges faced in modern close protection scenarios.”
The course structure addresses four core areas of close protection: executive security, high-net-worth individuals, media protection, and hostile environments, ensuring participants are prepared for various scenarios. Key course features include:
– Scenario-based training in actual London locations
– Instruction from experienced industry professionals
– Interaction with notable figures from the close protection field
– Food and accommodation at a dedicated training centre
– Post-course interviews with ASG’s Risk Management team
The course covers vital skills such as threat assessment, search procedures, venue security, route planning, surveillance, driver training, and emergency first aid. Legal considerations and conflict management are also emphasised, with real-world scenarios incorporated throughout the program to enhance learning outcomes.
Recognised by Queen Elizabeth II as a Member of the Victorian Order (MVO) for distinguished service, Ephgrave’s expertise supports the program’s goal of producing skilled professionals equipped to meet the rising demand for close protection operatives.
