Mitie Wins Contract Extensions with Four Major Airports

Mitie_logo_400x400The UK’s largest facilities management company, Mitie, has expanded its partnerships with four UK airports including London Stansted, Manchester and East Midlands and Belfast. These contracts involve Mitie delivering cleaning, waste management, technical support, security, and baggage screening services across these busy airports.

The Manchester Airports Group (MAG) has extended its contract with Mitie for an additional two years to continue providing and technical services at Manchester and East Midlands airports. This contract, initially initiated in 2016, encompasses over 300 colleagues employed at both airports. Mitie is responsible for enhancing services at these airports, particularly as passenger numbers approach pre-COVID-19 levels. Manchester Airport, as the UK’s third busiest, welcomed over 25 million passengers this year, with an additional 3 million at East Midlands Airport, underscoring the importance of maintaining a clean environment.

In addition to cleaning, Mitie offers Technical Services at these sites, including reactive and pre-planned maintenance for heating, ventilation, air conditioning systems (HVAC), electrical systems, doors, drains, fire alarms, and water hygiene.

Down south, Mitie has been working with London Stansted Airport since 2008, providing hold baggage screening (HBS) services. The contract has seen three extensions since its inception, and this year, Mitie signed a new two-year contract to continue delivering these essential services.

London Stansted Airport, also part of MAG, serves over 25 million passengers annually. Mitie’s security agents play a vital role in preventing contraband, explosives, and other dangerous items from being loaded onto aircraft. This includes ensuring proper authorization and declaration for the transfer of large sums of money, some of which may be linked to criminal activity. In addition to operating the airport’s advanced screening equipment, Mitie’s highly trained security agents provide an indispensable layer of scrutiny and expert judgment to the screening process.

Finally, Mitie has further extended its longstanding partnership with George Best Belfast City Airport, securing a three-year contract to deliver security services at the site. Since 2015, Mitie has closely collaborated with the airport to enhance its security operations.

Mitie will continue to offer a range of services at the airport, including passenger and hold baggage screening, patrolling, and essential ad-hoc security operations. Additionally, Mitie will introduce enhanced training, specifically focused on supporting passengers with special assistance needs, enabling colleagues to provide a high standard of customer service.

Of the contract extensions, Jason Towse, Managing Director, Business Services, Mitie, said, “These new contracts are testament to our colleagues’ dedication to deliver exceptional services and enhanced passenger experiences across these airports, underpinning our status as a leading provider in the aviation sector. We look forward to supporting the journeys of the millions of passengers travelling through terminals at Manchester, East Midlands, Stansted, and Belfast as we head into the busy summer months and beyond.”

With regards to the extension in Northern Ireland, Mark Beattie, Chief Operations Officer, Belfast City Airport, said, “At Belfast City Airport, providing a comfortable, convenient, and safe experience for each of our passengers is our top priority. Over the past number of years, we have developed a positive working relationship with Mitie which has allowed us to continue to deliver the high standard and quality of service and safety that the airport is known for, including processing passengers through security in an average time of only six minutes. We are very pleased to extend our contract with Mitie and we look forward to the future of our partnership.”
