Bob Forsyth, the Managing Director of MITIE Total Security Management (TSM) introduces his eighteenth blog on Infologue.com by looking at the effect FM bundling is having on security.

Bob writes; “There is a major debate raging at the moment around FM bundling and the impact this has on security; I have been recently asked my view.”

“In terms of MITIE it’s a moot point; I operate a 100% focused security business based on risk and leading edge technology whilst being part of the wider MITIE Group, the FTSE 250 strategic outsourcing company. We manage some of the most high-profile, security-conscious accounts in the UK owing to our experience, expertise and sector specialisms. The success of a contract does not hang on whether the security element is bundled into a wider FM contract or if it is a separate service, but is driven by the way the security remit is managed under the framework. Where security is part of a bundle or integrated FM contract the determining factor is often where security sits in the client’s business i.e. property, facilities or a standalone security remit. This will always dictate where it features in terms of strategic importance.”

“So long as the subject matter experts are involved the security function will not be diluted or adversely impacted. With clear communication channels and stakeholder mapping, security as part of a bundle need not be managed any differently to if it were a single service: communication and understanding the client is essential in both scenarios. Security is more critical for an organisation as it mitigates the various risks businesses face and often maintains operational capability, whereas other services are not necessarily business critical.”

“Bundling has been driven by economic pressures with the attraction of service efficiency; however, bundling is not the only option for clients who want to reduce spend. I have discussed widely the benefits of technology enhancing the traditional security approach and the option to design solutions based on risk. So even if an organisation does want integrated or bundled service provision there may still be potential for further savings to be made by investigating the security needs based on specific risks and outputs.”

“Whether our business delivers security as a single service or as part of a wider delivery model, we approach the management and mitigation of risk in the same way, so in essence it makes no difference to the effectiveness or the level of protection our clients receive to their people, buildings, assets and reputation.”
