UK Security and Resilience Industry Suppliers’ Community
Infologue.com often receives questions on whom and what various security industry organisations are. As a result Infologue.com has initiated a new monthly series of articles focussing on security industry organisations, their history, what they stand for and what their current objectives are. The first organisation to fall under the Infologue.com microscope is the UK Security and Resilience Industry Suppliers’ Community or more commonly known as RISC. This organisation is an open alliance of companies, trade associations and think tanks bound by a constitution that sets out its common vision and how it will operate. It brings together the UK industrial community to support the Government in creating a more secure and safe environment for UK citizens.
Origins of RISC
About six years ago some forward-looking people in the UK security industry started an informal debate about the lack of a channel for Government to talk at a strategic level with industry. Other sectors of industry had well developed routes, but security was seen as too diverse to have something similar. But the challenges faced by the society, particularly from terrorism, changed that view. The debate took off and at the time when Government was creating the Office of Security and Counter-Terrorism to co-ordinate its internal efforts, the creation of RISC was logical parallel initiative from industry and the two have co-operated well since then.
RISC is an open alliance of companies, trade associations and think tanks bound by a constitution that sets out its common vision and how it will operate. It brings together the UK industrial community to support the Government in creating a more secure and safe environment for UK citizens. Membership of RISC is through the family of organisations that support it: A|D|S, British Security Industry Association (BSIA) and Intellect are three major supporting trade bodies, with links to many others. It has a governing Council that includes companies in the sector, trade bodies, thinks tanks and universities.
RISC is engaged with the Government in a range of activities to support national security objectives. HMG and RISC have set up five Industrial Advisory Groups to allow specific industrial advice on key areas for national security, currently:
- Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Protection
- Information and Communications Technology
- Protection of the Critical National Infrastructure
- Police Capability Working Group
- Olympics and Paralympics
RISC has an International Group that meets regularly to consider how links with other countries and international institutions can help to meet national security objectives. Recently RISC has contributed to the Government’s Consultation on Equipment, Support and Technology for UK Defence and Security and has met Ministers to discuss what the security can contribute. If you would like more information on RISC please contact one of the trade bodies mentioned above or look at the website at www.riscuk.org
