Hamilton security director fined

A Hamilton-based director has been fined after pleading guilty to supplying unlicensed security guarding. Wilson Bowman, 38, was fined £500 following sentencing at Hamilton Sheriff Court yesterday [10 March]. He was convicted of one count of supplying an unlicensed operative.

Bowman was director of Master Site Services Ltd which supplied security guards mainly to construction sites. The SIA understands that the company no longer trades.

The SIA decided to refer the case to the Procurator Fiscal as there was evidence of continued offending, despite SIA investigators having issued several formal warnings.

The company attempted to convince the SIA that operatives were in-house security guards and therefore not subject to regulation. However, an SIA investigation revealed that this was not the case. Bowman failed to co-operate with the SIA during the investigation.

Head of Investigation Sara Brennan said: “Non-compliant companies take business away from the compliant industry, and may put the public at risk as unlicensed guards will not have undergone criminal record checks or met training standards.

“The SIA takes non-compliance very seriously and will take action where appropriate. I would like to thank Strathclyde Police for their assistance in this case in detaining Mr Bowman to be interviewed by the SIA.”
